Staying vibrant, economically viable - Holland Sentinel Article

Published in Holland Sentinel on Sunday, January 6, 2008

By STEVE RALPH

Holland Young Professionals isn’t merely a social club. The local nonprofit has served the community in many ways in its first four years.

“We plug ourselves directly into things that are already happening,” said Mat Nguyen, group co-founder.

The most recent example — Park Theatre’s third annual New Year’s Eve party, which HYP (pronounced “hip”) helped sponsor and organize for the first time in 2007.

“We had just over 100 people there, more than any other year,” said Katy Nguyen, HYP board member and former Park Theatre general manager. “We raised $3,000 for the Park Theatre.”

HYP’s involvement made the difference in the event’s success, she said.

“Our goal was to create a community for young professionals in the area. So far we’ve been pretty successful,” said Barry Rice, president and co-founder.

Through networking, professional development seminars, social events and a scholarship fund, HYP hopes to attract young professional adults to the area, which members say is key to keeping Holland a vibrant, attractive, economically sound place to live and work into the future.

A central element of that mission includes serving the community. The group pairs social and networking events with philanthropy. The Community Action House is one beneficiary of HYP’s efforts.

HYP New Year’s gets spotted!

HYP set a new standard for New Year’s in Holland, Michigan.  On December 31, 2007, HYP transformed the Park Theatre into a dazzling NYE venue complete with live music, a giant discoball, full bar, 90+ guests and a dizzying array of Bond-themed decor.  The Holland Sentinel caught up with us during the event.

Plus, the event raised almost $3,000 for the Park Theatre which will be used to help fund operations and future events at the theatre.

Thank you to everyone that attended the event, to the 33rd Street Band and to all of our sponsors including: Mark Oegema, BlueSky Sessions, Tony and Ginner Castillo and the Holland Area Arts Council.  Let the countdown begin… only 363 days left until NYE09.

January Membership Spotlight

nates-pic.JPG

Name: Nate Volkema

Age: 27

Company: John Hancock Financial

Occupation: Financial Advisor: I help individuals, family’s and businesses better plan and organize their life insurance, investment, and financial affairs.

How long have you worked/lived in Holland: My entire life, born and raised

Hobbies: In the summer months I enjoy spending time on my sailboat or out racing sailboats. I am active in several non profit’s here in the area (Shriners and the Masonic Lodge). Spending time with my fiance (wife as of Janaury 5) Heather, friends and family. I have also gone back to school to earn my CFP (Certified Financial Planner) designation.

What do I like best about HYP: It is a great group for a number of reasons.  First, it is a great way to network and meet new people. One of my favorite quotes is “The only difference between who you are today and in 25 years is the books you read and the people you meet”. Not everyone needs to network for their career, but you can gain a lot personally from meeting new people.  Second, it is a great way to get involved and help out in the community and make Holland a better place for our generation and those to follow.  Also, there are a number of different events, programs, gatherings which will help you both personally and professionally. There is much more to HYP than the UNWINDS, so get involved!

Jokes: I’ll give you two (I think I heard this first one from Mike anyways) Q: What did the zero say to the eight?
A: Nice belt!

Q: If fruit grows on a fruit tree, what do chickens grow on?
A: A Poul-try!
