Lakeshore e2e Presents: Joel Tanis

May 20, 2008
5:30 pm

Join us on May 20th when Joel Schoon Tanis will present “From Art Project to Full Blown Company: the Making of a Kids TV Show”.

In his presentation, Joel will take us on the exciting journey of the making of his hit television show, Come On Over!, a children’s television program that won 6 regional Emmy awards last year, including one for Joel as host of the show.

Joel will share with us where the idea originated, how the project was implemented, and what the production looks like these days. You will have the opportunity to view an except of the show and may even become inspired to turn your own project into a successful enterprise.

The mission of Come On Over! is to model creativity and imagination in the lives of today’s children through interactive programming that raises their level of play, fun, and exploration. The show has had such special guests as Jars of Clay, Fred Willard (Everyone Loves Raymond, Best in Show), Ruth Buzzi (Laugh In, Sesame Street), Luis Avalos (Electric Company), Vicki Lewis (Newsradio, Finding Nemo), and Jason Hanson, the kicker for the Detroit Lions.

In addition to his show, Joel Schoon Tanis is a celebrated painter who has showed his work around the United States – from Michigan to Florida to Colorado to Washington D.C.. Joel has also shown his work as far away as Kenya where he did an art show in Nairobi to raise money for the African Fund for Endangered Wildlife. His murals can be found in many schools, children’s hospitals and churches (including murals in both Kenya and Zambia). His work is even in the collections of such notables as Walter Cronkite.
As an illustrator, Joel has contributed to more than a half a dozen books for children. Most notably, he illustrated the New International Reader’s Version Kid’s Study Bible for Zondervan. This fall he released The One, The Only Magnificent Me! through Mackinac Island Press. It is written by Dan Haseltine, the lead singer for the Christian rock group Jars of Clay.

Joel lives in Holland, with his wife Kathy who is working on a PhD in English Education at MSU.
