I enjoy spending time with my family, and enjoying the house my wife and I purchased last year. I enjoy mostly all sports, being outdoors, and trying to maintain an active lifestyle.

What do you like best about HYP, or if you’re a new member, what drew you to HYP?

HYP provides me with an opportunity to work and grow with other professionals in the Holland area.

Okay, here’s one just for fun. If you could have a super power, what would it be, and why?

To fly. Our trips back to the Chicago area to visit family wouldn’t take that long then.

Holland Area Arts Council Art Auction

I have worked in Holland for almost one year. It will be one year on 10/07/09.

What besides being HYP do you like to do (Hobbies)?

I enjoy going to see local live music, checking out any new and interesting events in the area and just spending time with my friends and family. I’d love to do more traveling in the future. J

What do you like best about HYP, or if you’re a new member, what drew you to HYP?

Because I didn’t grow up in Holland, when I started working here I was interested in having the chance to network with fellow young professionals from the area and did a little internet searching and found HYP.

Our President, Mr. Hill, is a funny guy; he’d like you to tell us a joke. He’s always looking to add to his own collection.

Mmmmm. This is a tough one. I wouldn’t say I’m the best “joke teller” so I think I’ll leave that talent solely to Mr. Hill.

Noon Speaker Series

Lakeshore Alliance Against Domestic and Sexual Violence (LAADSV), along with Grand Valley State University Women’s Center, is excited to offer a unique professional development opportunity for you, staff members and volunteers at GVSU’s Meijer Campus. The LAADSV mission is “To prevent and reduce the incidence of domestic and sexual violence. To promote safety for victims and families, and to hold abusers and perpetrators accountable. This will be accomplished through coordinated community response, program development, community education, and collaborative activities. These efforts are to be monitored through continual communication, research, and evaluation.” Starting this fall, we will be hosting a noon-series of training and informational sessions on dating/domestic violence and bullying prevention for practitioners and others that work with young people in their professions, schools, churches and neighborhood.

The noon series will be free of charge for all attendees. We will issue a certificate of completion for individuals attending the series for their professional development. For social workers needing CEU’s for licensing requirements this will be available for $15.

Our first program will be offered on Thursday, October 8th at 12pm at GVSU Meijer Campus located at 515 S. Waverly Road in Holland. Lesley Coghill will speak on “Preventing Dating Violence”. The second session will be offered by the Michigan State University Extension Team on Tuesday, November 17th (same time and location) called “Mean Girls and Real Boys: Exploring Bullying Through the Lens of Gender and Other Differences”. Jalapeno Eating Contest at the Salsa Showdown

Labor Day Truck Parade

What: Labor Day Truck Parade and Celebration at Holland Civic Center
Where: Downtown Holland and Zeeland
When: Labor Day, Monday, September 7. Trucks rumble down Main Avenue in Zeeland at 9:15 am, then 8th Street in Holland at 9:30 am. Post parade festivities, including up-close look at the trucks, free ice cream, hot dogs and raffle immediately following at the Holland Civic Center.
Who: Over 50 trucks from local businesses, sponsored by West Michigan Works.
Why: To honor the hard-working employees of local businesses on Labor Day.

The best part about HYP is the people. Everybody is very welcoming. It’s nice to see people with similar goals and professional attitudes.

Three men go hunting together. A priest, a rabbi, and a monk. As they lurk the woods with guns drawn, the men come upon a deer. At the same time, all three point the gun and shoot, killing the deer. The men argue for some time over who actually killed the deer, but no one is actually sure, so they call a detective. After some extensive investigative work, the detective arrives at a conclusion.

“It was the priest,” exclaims the detective.

“How can you be so sure?” the other two ask.

“You see” says the detective. “The bullet went in one ear and out the other.”

Holland Area Arts Council Monte Carlo Night

What besides being HYP do you like to do (Hobbies)? I love being around the water and especially boating. If it has a motor and a paint job I probably want one. I own a couple of pieces of rental property with my dad and enjoy the renovation we are currently doing on one of the houses, although I definitely look forward to its completion especially with summer almost here. I enjoy traveling near or far and would say the best trip so far was to Italy two summers ago.
