The 2008/2009 HYP/HACC mentoring program has been a great success. After holding a panel discussion in the fall on the benefits of mentoring, 5 matches were made. Participants have been meeting 4-6 times over the past six months and have reported fantastic experiences and learning opportunities.

One of our mentors, David Kuiper, stated “Being asked to be a mentor with Holland Young Professionals was a real honor.  I’ve enjoyed getting to know my mentee, and sharing from my knowledge and experience.  Even though we work in very different industries (financial services and manufacturing) we are able to share best practices in many areas.” Goals have ranged from obtaining new technical skills to career planning to work/life balance.

The mentoring committee is currently taking the feedback from the pilot group to begin working on the next round of matches in the fall. Those interested in learning more about how they can become a participant in the mentoring program should contact Joe Lampen at Joseph.Lampen@gmail.com

The next installation of Super Happy Fun Time Burlesque is THIS Thursday, April 23rd at the Park Theater in Holland.

Discount Tickets for this event are available for HYP members ($8/ea) - please contact Jen Pider at 616-717-0048 or jenpider@gmail.com.

    Burlesque?

The public’s mind wanders rightly into the gutter.

This is art. Art is a good thing.

It’s the medium in which the artist reflects the viewer back at themselves. When you see this girl on stage taking off her clothes, what does that inspire in you? Do you look at that body and the context in which it’s presented? Do you think of it as beautiful, humorous and zany, or does it inspire deviance, guilt, shame or desire?

Who cares? This is burlesque, baby, this is a good time!!

Burlesque is an underground movement sweeping the nation. Every city from Salt Lake to LA boasts burlesque revivals happening weekly at clubs and theaters. Burlesque stars such as Dita Von Teese spearhead national campaigns for products like Revlon and national TV shows such as NBC’s Americas got Talent.

Composer and Saxophonist Corey Ruffin, aka Mr. Happy Pants, leads Michigan’s part in the vaudeville and burlesque revival as host and bandleader for the nationally renowned burlesque troupe based out of Grand Rapids, Super Happy Funtime Burlesque.

In a typical 2 hour Super Happy Funtime Burlesque show, the audience members see the finest (and sexiest) Michigan performers in an unrestrained and over the top show that will leave them laughing and begging for more! Glass Walking, Hula Hooping, Stilt Walking, Fire, Aerial Acrobatics, Live Jazz, Magic, Illusion, Stand Up Comedy, Costumes and Striptease.

Our naughty musical sexy comedy is a regular sell-out in 400 (or more) seat venues such as the Wealthy Theatre and the Intersection Lounge in Grand Rapids, Bell’s Beer Garden and Poppa Pete’s in Kalamazoo, Park Theatre in Holland, Acorn Theatre in Three Oakes, The Ritz in Warren, the Inside Out Gallery in Traverse City and many more.

With a 25 member cast, a 8 piece avante gypsy jazz rock band, an unforgettable MC who keeps the evening rolling and audience laughing, multi-media, comedy sketches, music, magic, fire-eating/spinning, contortion, juggling, 100% original acts created by local talent this show is a STEAL at $15 advance, 20 DOS. (doors at 7:30 pm)

The audience will confidently resound ‘My town is quirky, hip and edgy. It’s cool; it’s fun to live in!’
